Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about Starter Locs.

Most Starter Locs installations take between three and six hours depending on hair length, thickness, and chosen loc size. Your stylist will provide a time estimate during consultation. Additional detangling or complex parting may extend the appointment time.

Yes — please arrive with hair fully detangled. If the stylist must detangle, extra charges apply or the appointment may be rescheduled. Proper detangling ensures cleaner parting, faster installation, and healthier loc formation.

When installed correctly by a trained stylist, Starter Locs should not damage hair. We use tension-minimizing methods and recommend maintenance to prevent breakage. Existing damage or overly tight styling can increase risk, so discuss concerns during your consultation.

In the first weeks, avoid heavy manipulation, keep scalp clean, and moisturize lightly. Sleep on a satin scarf, avoid tight styles, and follow your stylist's wash and retwist schedule to encourage neat locking and reduce unraveling.

Absolutely — you can select loc thickness and parting style during consultation. Keep in mind smaller locs require more time and maintenance, while larger locs mature differently. Your stylist will advise based on hair density, texture, and desired look.

If the stylist requires significant detangling, we may add a detangling fee or reschedule to preserve loc integrity. We'll assess upon arrival and communicate options. Please come detangled to avoid delays, extra costs, or reduced installation quality.
